That’s what a post on a friend’s Facebook page about Trayvon Martin solicited.
My comment would have been number 167. It was a good one too. A real zinger. I was going to put some people in their places! It was snarky, condescending, self-congratulatory and funny all at the same time. My favorite kind of comment.
Begrudgingly, I erased it instead of posting it.
I erased it because my comment would have thrust me into this same argument swirling all around me. An argument that totally runs the wrong way.
The death of Trayvon Martin is not political. Injustice never is.
Injustice and inequality are moral issues. That’s why they’re so quickly embraced and so readily opposed. Only moral issues stir the masses and threaten the status quo.
When radio show ringmasters use this death as the A Block fodder for their daily masquerade, we diminish Trayvon Martin. When political parties use this death as an attack against each other, we diminish Trayvon Martin. When you use this death as fuel for your I-hate-the-media combustible, you diminish Trayvon Martin.
Step away from the spoonful your commentator of choice is feeding you and reflect. A boy is dead. Sin broke through. The Holy Spirit grieves. Shouldn’t we?
This may be a news story but it is not a new story. Cain murdered Abel. Absalom murdered Amnon. Joab murdered Amasa. Since the fall of man, sin’s aim has been death. Murder is a bipartisan act.
If you and I were to sit down over coffee, I would tell you that I hope an arrest is made. I’m not a lawyer or a policeman, and maybe there is a truth still untold, but this event sounds criminal to me. A boy was deemed suspicious for no apparent reason. He was pursued and eventually shot. I think that's a crime. Strangely, some consider this point of view controversial. I don't get that.
But if you disagree with me, I'm not going to argue with you. Here’s my point: I’m not angry at you. I’m not angry with the politicians. I’m not angry with CNN or FOX News.
I’m angry that Trayvon is dead. I’m angry that Zimmerman pulled that trigger. I’m angry that we’re partisan enough to argue over murder. I’m angry that sin won.
This isn’t political. This is moral. How are we missing that?
